Newborn colds are scary and exhausting because there is no medication to give such a tiny baby. Thankfully, I used these three things to help with my congested newborn.
As some of you may know I gave birth to our second baby girl on February 9, 2018. And within the first month of her life she got a “baby cold” with a stuffy nose, courtesy of her older sister. Since she was a congested newborn there wasn’t much I could give her to ease her stuffy nose and get some sleep.
DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a doctor. Please seek medical attention if you baby has severe congestion, preventing them from breathing. Ask your pediatrician before taking any medications. I am just giving my advice on what I did to help ease my congested newborn’s stuffy nose.
Now I say “baby cold” because the symptom she had was a stuffy nose/congestion. The poor little thing was so congested she could was having a hard time catching her breath to eat. We would have to take frequent breaks to let her settle and clear her nose.
But I used these 3 items and within 3-5 days she was back to normal!

Item 1- Humidifier
This item has helped bring some moisture back into the dry air (blame running the heater in this cold weather which dries out the air) and helped relieve some of her congestion.
I use the Crane brand humidifier (check out my review here). Having this run 24/7 has been a life saver.
Item 2- Diffusing essential oil blends for respiratory congestion and purification
I have recently been getting into using essential oils but normally I just diffused lavender to help me relax and relieve some stress.
My mom had been in town and she is super into the oils and had me diffuse this blend from Young Living called R.C (respiratory congestion) and the purification blend oil.
The purification blend helps kill any lingering germs or odors in the air.
The R.C blend has oils that help with breathing. The R.C blend relaxes the stuffy environment to help promote restful sleep by helping create the feeling of normal, clear breathing.
Diffusing these blends helped with respiratory support and seemed to help her sleep better.
Item 3- NoseFrida nose sucker
This last item has hands down been the most essential!
This nose sucker has helped me get all the mucus and boogers out of my poor little girls nose!
I use the NoseFrida (check my review on this product here) to literally suck out the boogers and help clear her nasal passages.
BONUS ITEM:
They now make a vapor rub for babies 3 months and older that works wonders (I still use on my almost 8 year old now!) This helps sooth their chest and helps them breathe as well. Here is the one I use which is labelling for 3M+.
Having an older kiddo definitely makes bringing home little germs easier for my infant to catch, but with these 3 items I’m ready if she gets a little “baby cold” again. Hopefully I won’t have to use these items any time soon but I doubt it. Here’s hoping!!
