Whether you are sending your kids to actual school or homeschooling this year, a good routine is crucial for a smooth morning. Having a getting ready for school checklist makes things much easier.
School day mornings can get crazy and hectic if you do not have a set school morning routine. This is why a getting ready for school checklist is handy to have on hand!
I created a downloadable for you to print yourself and add to the list if you need to, but here are my basic getting ready for school checklist items.

Brush Teeth
I tend to have my kids (and myself) do this first because usually the first thing everyone does when they first get up is head to the bathroom.
While you’re in there you might as well brush your teeth and get that out of the way.
Make Bed
This step may seem odd when your trying to rush out the door but I really believe having a made bed adds to kids self confidence and accomplishments for the day.
That way when they get home from school or get done with their school work, they can head to their room to a freshly made bed and feel relaxed and accomplished.
Having a made bed can also prevent them from crawling back into it and making you late.
Get Ready
Get dressed and hair done for the day. Having your kids get dressed even if they are homeschooling prepares them for the day ahead and can prevent the feeling of laziness and feeling lethargic.
Breakfast
This is an obvious step in the day. Breakfast is crucial to make sure you kids are energized and ready for the day ahead.
A hungry kid can’t focus at school and can become irritable and grumpy. No one wants to deal with that.
Backpack Packed
Making sure their backpack has everything they will need for the day. If they are homeschooling then have them make sure they have all their items they will need for that days lesson in order to be prepared and not waste time looking for things.
Lunch Made
Having your older kids make their own lunch can save time in the morning for you mama. Or if you kiddos are too little, MOM HACK: prep school lunches the night before.
I use this bento box for my daughter and I prep it the night before and store in the fridge.
This way, the next morning all I (or her) have to do is put the bento box inside the lunch bag and its all done.
Water Bottle
Fill the water bottle with some fresh cool water will help them stay hydrated throughout the day. This will also help keep them energized and can help curb hunger during the school day by drinking plenty of water.
We use these Hydroflasks that keep their waters cool all day long! Read full review on the best water bottle for kids.
These are the main steps I take to make sure my kids have a great morning and we are on time and not rushing out the door.
You can download the getting ready for school checklist and add things you need in your routine to make things run smoother in your home.
