Hobbies for Stay at Home Moms

Ever get bored being a stay at home mom? I mean sure there are a million things to do around the house and caring for the kids, but do you still find yourself longing for something more? You might want to take up a hobby and here are the best hobbies for stay at home moms.

Being a stay at home mom doesn’t mean you can’t do anything for yourself. I know personally I have felt like I’ve lost myself many times during my parenting journey. If you are anything like me, you may feel lost and you aren’t sure how to get “you” back. I would suggest some hobbies for stay at home moms.

These hobbies can be done from home. These can all be done while the kids nap or sleep. They can be done at your pace.

I love hobbies like that. And sometimes these hobbies can even turn into paychecks (depending on the hobby).

But this isn’t a post about how to earn money as a stay at home mom, this is a post about how to regain back some of your own self and hobbies you can undertake while being a stay at home mom.

Crafting

Take up crafting. This hobby is great whether or not you think you are creative. Everyone can make things with some simple directions.

I personally love watching Jennifer Maker on YouTube. She has crafts ranging from simple to more complex and they are the cutest things.

Crafting may take up some investing if you want to use a machine like a Cricut. And supplies can add up but you can find great deals too!

Kayla Makes over at kaylamakes.com always shares some great crafting tutorials and sales on her Instagram page.

Crafting doesn’t have to be time consuming and expensive, just depends what you want to create.

Personally I started with a simple silhouette cutting machine I found off Facebook Marketplace and then upgraded to a Cricut Maker after I found my love of it.

I love making cute shirts and totes for friends and family and it even makes great gifts too! This one of my favorite hobbies for stay at home moms.

Painting

This sort of goes with crafting but its something also completely different.

Whether you want to invest in some painting classes or just watch tutorials on YouTube, there is a way to make it happen.

You can use this as an outlet for your frustrations and emotions or just a space and thing to do to clear your mind and get away.

This is a great hobby that you could even get the kids in on too! Get them some tiny canvas’ and some paint and voila!

CrateJoy even has crafting paint boxes for kids you can get them to keep them occupied while you paint.

Blogging/Vlogging

This blogging journey of mine personally has been amazing, it started as a creative outlet to get my parenthood journey frustrations out and help those other new moms out there.

I didn’t find honest reviews or advice when I was on my journey so I decided to become that to other mamas out there.

Blogging or journaling is a great way to get your thoughts out and even help others out there around the world feel understood and less lonely.

This is another one of my favorite hobbies for stay at home moms!

If you want to get started with this, I highly recommend Cate Rosales’ blogging courses. They are the perfect way to get set up properly and start on your journey!

And if typing isn’t your thing, you can always start a YouTube channel and start videoing the things you want to talk about instead of writing it.

Sports

Some may not consider joining a sport a “hobby” but I think it can be a great fun way to get out and connect with others.

There are sport adult groups ranging in experience and all sort of different options. There are adult kickball leagues, soccer, basketball, golf, softball, etc. Tons of different options, just google it in your area and I’m sure you’ll find something.

Joining sports is a great way to get out and socialize. Being a stay at home mom can feel quite isolating and this is a great way to get out!

Gardening

Now this may seem like a silly hobby, but you can get quite carried away with planting and gardening!

Ever heard of a “plant mom”? Yeah it’s a thing.

Gardening can be another great way to calm yourself and find peace in just planting and creating something new.

Sewing/Knitting

This could fall under crafting too but I know sewing and knitting are way different than normal crafting and takes way more time.

This hobby is great because you can make all sorts of items ranging from scarves to blankets and socks to mittens.

Sewing is great because its a life skill as well! Learning to sew buttons on and hem pants can be useful in everyday life.

Taking up a sewing or knitting hobby can be relatively inexpensive depending on where you shop, but even Amazon has some great knitting and sewing finds.

You could also do this when the kids are awake playing or watching a show too. You can find little pockets of time to work on a few stiches.

Photography

This can be as simple as taking your phone to a pretty place and taking pictures of flowers or the sunset. This can even be taking photos for friends and family.

You can invest in a high quality camera or use your phone. The possibilities are endless with this hobby.

There are lots of hobbies for stay at home moms out there but these are my top favorites.

Another tip that can help is taking time for yourself whether that is self-care day or becoming a healthier mom.

Hopefully these gave you some ideas on what to do to gain a little more time for yourself and take up a hobby to start feeling more like yourself again.

  • Most of the things you listed here I have pretty much done all them before I became a mom! XD

Even though I no longer do all of them on a daily basis, One thing that I've kept going back to is gardening, and painting. I've recently decided to brush up my watercolor skills by getting an online course.

And I have to say, Blogging is now my 'work'. and I love how it keeps me busy, on my toes and my brain churning.

Whenever I speak to my husband about blogging, I'd tell him I need to get to work. and I'd record the hours I clock in at different times of the day to track how many hours I've spent 'working' daily =D

I do say, my life have changed for the better and life feels so much more purposeful since I've embarked on the journey of blogging =)

  • I love finding time to be creative, I just have to make time for it or it doesn't happen. It's so important to have time to be the "non-mom side of us."

  • These are great ideas! I miss nap time though! I used to get some craft stuff done when they napped...Now I just have to make sure to carve out that time for me somewhere in the day....

  • I love all of these ideas. I actually purchased a hydroponic farm stand during quarantine. Now I am harvesting tons of tomatoes, basil, cucs, peppers, and mint (for mojitos). It has been a fun hobby, especially when I know where my veggies came from at dinner. Photography is a fantastic idea, too. Maybe that's next.

  • Love all these hobby ideas! I blog and love it. Great way to share and help others also and Cate’s courses you suggest are awesome.

I wish I had the talent to paint, but it’s pretty sad - ha. Thanks for putting this together, I’m sharing with my daughter.

  • These are great ideas! I started to get into photography about a year ago, but haven’t made time for it. I definitely need to get back to doing a hobby that I love!
