A mommy time out is a magical thing that can actually save your sanity when things get overwhelming as a mom.

Anyone who has kids knows parenting is challenging. Both mentally, physically, and emotionally.

There is a way to help with that overwhelming feeling, it’s called a mommy time out.

A mommy time out is when you put yourself away from the situation which is causing you stress, anger, frustration, etc.

Just like you would put the kids on time out for bad behavior or breaking the rules, you as a parent would put yourself on time out before the “bad behavior”.

Before you lash out, get angry and yell. (ways to avoid yelling you can read those tips here).

Whether that means going into the bathroom and crying or locking yourself in your room for a time out away from the little gremlins.

Or even if that means actually taking a longer break and getting out of the house. You can leave the kids home with hubby, grandma, friend, etc. and get out of the house for a few hours and regroup.

Getting out or away and regrouping yourself is a reason you need a mommy time out. It gives you that TIME and SPACE!

Two things us moms don’t usually get much of anymore.

Taking the time to take care of your mental health is important. If you are overwhelmed or frustrated, then you aren’t at your best and it may spill into your parenting choices.

If you are happy, relaxing, and regrouped as a parent then you will make better parenting choices.

You can’t pour from an empty cup mama!

Taking a mommy time out is not mean or uncaring. It is caring for yourself. The mommy time out is a great way to do that.

I usually take a mommy time out when I am feeling overwhelmed and I can feel myself about to blow up at the next person who asks me for a snack for the 103848 time!

I go into my room, shut and lock the door and just take some deep breaths. I will cry if I have to, I will scream into a pillow if I have to, I do whatever it takes to calm myself down so I can walk out of that room a calmer person.

You could do those things or you could write in a journal, listen to some calming music or even go workout when you are feeling frustrated and in need of a mommy time out.

So next time you are feeling overwhelmed or on the verge of yelling at everyone in the house and throwing all the kids toys in the trash, go into your room and put yourself in a mommy time out.

It can help more than you realize. Just taking those few minutes to yourself can have a tremendous effect on your mental health and your family dynamic.
